'The Big Friendly Read' now on!

The Reading Agency's Summer Reading Challenge, which invites children aged 4 to 11 to borrow and read any six library books over the school holidays, is now on in libraries across the UK. The Summer Reading Challenge, which has been running in UK libraries every summer for 18 years, encourages over 800,000 children to read for fun during the long summer holiday. Older children can get involved as library volunteers and advisers.
The theme for this year’s challenge is 'The Big Friendly Read' to celebrate 100 years of the world’s favourite storyteller, Roald Dahl. Resources feature some of Roald Dahl’s best-loved characters and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake.
To take part in the challenge, children simply sign up - for free - at their nearest library. They will receive a collector’s folder and, for each of the six books they borrow and read over the summer, they receive a collector's card to add to the folder. The cards are packed with puzzles, jokes and Roald Dahl trivia, and feature original Quentin Blake illustrations. They explore six of the most popular themes in Roald Dahl’s books, such as invention, mischief, friendship and 'langwitch' - a BFG-themed exploration of the delight and power of words.
