Special BFG-themed illustration for the Bowes Museum

Friday 3rd August 2018

Quentin Blake has created a drawing for the Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle, County Durham, which is currently hosting The BFG in Pictures exhibition on tour from House of Illustration.

Asked by staff to create a work for the Museum's permanent collection as a legacy of the exhibition, Quentin decided to create a piece inspired by the clockwork swan which is housed there as one of the star exhibits.  The resulting drawing, created in pen and ink with a watercolour wash, shows Roald Dahl's BFG holding up the Swan with a fish in its beak.  It has been framed and can be seen hanging at the entrance to the main BFG exhibition.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that Quentin Blake agreed to create this unique drawing, and equally thrilled with the result,” said staff member Amy Bainbridge.
“It’s particularly pertinent to the Bowes Museum as it depicts the BFG cradling a swan eating a fish, inspired by the museum’s life-size Silver Swan automaton.

'The BFG in Pictures' is on show at the Bowes Museum until 30 September.
