Auction of artwork to benefit Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity
Wednesday 11th October 2023
Marvellously Revolting Recipes, inspired by Dahl’s works, was published by Puffin on 28th September. Bonhams is marking the occasion with a special auction entitled Marvellously Revolting Recipes: Works Sold to Benefit Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. The online sale runs from 11-20 October, with estimates ranging from £50-5,000.
The sale features a collection of pictures from the recipe book, with many of the illustrators donating their original artwork to be sold in Bonhams’ special charity auction. Proceeds of the sale will benefit Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, which provides specialist nurses and support for children and families living with some of the most serious and complex health conditions in the UK. Roald Dahl Nurses are a vital lifeline to the whole family, co-ordinating care and providing access to high quality emotional support.
Quentin has contributed six illustrations in pen, ink and watercolour, including his Illustration for Hot Noodles Made from Poodles on a Slice of Garden Hose (from James and the Giant Peach) with an estimate of £1,500-2,000; along with his Illustration for an edible Enormous Crocodile estimated to reach £1,000-1,500. The sale also features works from Axel Scheffler, Abe Odedina, Emily Carew, Mini Grey and many others. Each of the 33 lots, ranging from juggling goats to sleepy dragons, offers a chance to support a wonderful cause.
In his role as co-president of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, Quentin commented: “It was marvellous creating the drawings for this wonderful book, but the benefits from their proceeds is really, really marvellous.”
Commenting on the book, charity patron Dame Joanna Lumley, who portrayed James' Aunt Spiker in the 1996 movie version of 'James and the Giant Peach', said “Aunt Spiker would hate it: but I adore this Marvellously subversive cookbook, filled with inspiring pictures and delicious recipes. The Fried Snowballs would make her shriek with rage. Aprons on, people! There are treats inside for every occasion.”
Lots in 'Mavellously Revolting Recipes' are open for bidding online on Bonhams' website until 20 October
